•   Aamir Khan celebrates 10 years of Lagaan

Aamir Khan Productions and its most notable production Lagaan turned 10 on Wednesday. On the occasion, Aamir Khan threw a bash and invited the people who have been associated with all his film productions till date.

So, the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Javed Akhtar, Ashutosh Gowarikar and the actors and directors of other films were there,
though Amol Gupte (the creative director of Taare Zameen Par) and Anusha Rizvi (the director of Peepli [Live]) were not invited.

Describing the celebration as a trip ‘down memory lane’, Aamir Khan said he was deeply touched by the presence at the party of those people who have worked with his company.

Recalling the experience of making Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India, Aamir said he was impressed by the film’s script. Aamir also recalled how director Ashutosh Gowarikar was in two minds about roping in Amitabh Bachchan for the introductory voiceover. First, Gowarikar asked Aamir to approach Amitabh Bachchan. But when Aamir did, Gowarikar said he wasn’t sure about
using Big B’s voice because everyone was too familiar with it.

“I was shocked and argued with Ashutosh why this had not struck him before asking me to go and meet Amitji. But, Amitji took it so sportingly and told me that he was relieved since all films for which he had done a voiceover had miserably flopped,” Aamir said.

But then Ashutosh changed his mind again and decided that he wanted Amitabh Bachchan for the voice over.

Aamir recalled: “I again went to Amitji and told him that my director has gone mad. He now wants you for the film. Amitji did not utter a word but reminded me that he was superstitious and felt that he brought bad luck. I said we are ready to take the risk because so many factors had gone against the film during the making but we had overcome all the difficulties.”

Lyricist Javed Akhtar recalled that when he first heard about the project, he was convinced it was a sure-shot flop. He even tried to persuade Aamir and Ashutosh not to go ahead with Lagaan.

“I was shocked when Ashutosh Gowarikar narrated me the script. It had a long list of don’ts of Hindi cinema. I thought I should protect Aamir that he should not commit this suicide. But, both he and Ashutosh treated me like an elder and did not listen to me,” Javed said.

Today, we all know that Lagaan is among the best films of Indian cinema. It got nominated for the Oscars, though could not win the golden man.

•    Shahrukh Khan does it for young actors!

There’s a reason why Shahrukh Khan has been keeping a low profile about his production Always Kabhi Kabhi, starring a host of young actors.

The movie, slated to release this Friday, introduces Zoa Morani and Satyajeet Dube and features Giselle Monteiro and Ali Fazal. Shahrukh Khan has just an item song ‘Antenna’ which will not be used in the film.

Shahrukh Khan, we hear, has deliberately kept himself out of this film because he doesn’t want to steal the attention away from the young actors.

Roshan Abbas, the film’s director, says that Always Kabhi Kabhi is essentially a youth film. And though that doesn’t mean Shahrukh Khan has become ‘old’, his presence in the film would have tilted the balance away from the young actors.

“Let’s face it, if we have Shah Rukh in the film, he will automatically become the centre of all attention,” Abbas is quoted to have said.

Shahrukh himself has agreed to let the young actors take the lead in promoting the film. The badshah surveys it all silently from the shadows.

•    Salman Khan’s acting career peaks

Producers and directors in Bollywood are queuing up to sign Salman Khan nowadays. But the star doesn’t have time to sign all the films.

It’s often said that in the film industry one is as successful as one’s last film. But when one has shouldered two movies to the list of the biggest hits of the film industry, you know that the success is not just a flash in the pan. Salman Khan is the new darling of box office. And the two mammoth hit films he’s given on the trot -- Dabangg and Ready -- are testimony to his pull at the masses. Critics may pan his films, but the masses provide the seat bums and make them blockbusters.

Now, after the roaring success of Ready, Salman Khan’s acting career has peaked and a lot of filmmakers want to sign him. We hear that A Murugadoss, the man who directed Ghajini with Aamir Khan, wants to rope in Salman Khan for his next action film that will be high on style. Likewise, Karan Johar, the close buddy of Shahrukh Khan, has expressed his wish to produce a film with Salman. And there are other offers which are flying thick and fast Salman’s way.

But, the Dabangg Khan has no time for them. In fact, he’s having difficulty to take out time for his film Kick to be directed by Harish Shankar. Salman Khan once again plays a cop in the film and Sonakshi Sinha is his heroine.

And the reason Salman can’t spare time for Kick is because his hands are already full of projects. He’s about to wrap up his

Bodyguard with Kareena Kapoor. He’ll also be shooting for the Yash Raj film Ek Tha Tiger with Katrina Kaif. Post that, he’ll commit to Dabangg 2 for brother Arbaaz Khan and a tentatively titled film Jungle for brother Sohail Khan.

So at 45, the Bollywood’s most eligible bachelor has no time for new films. Perhaps he has time for love!
